Job Maintenance. What is it all about? - September 1998

We all know that maintaining our personal health is an important fact of life. But what about maintaining the health of our job? We often do not think about our health until something goes wrong, and that is also what can happen with a job. If you are not proactive from the start it is harder for you to get ahead and possibly move into that dream position that you want.

A simple way a viewing job maintenance is looking at our lives on a day to day basis and how we maintain our health.

Four Essential Ingredients - Productivity
- Punctuality
- Reliability
- Responsibility
- Healthy Diet
- Exercise
- Sleep
- Balance of work and play
Missing Ingredients - Work assignments not done to the best of ones ability
- Supervisors may not pass on the key jobs, and promotion becomes more difficult
- We do not feel our best
- We lack energy and often times our bodies can not fight off illnesses as well
- We can become very stressed.
Lack of Attention to Detail - Ability to move up in the corporation can be limited
- Coworkers may have to pick up the slack and not appreciate it
- We are unable to function at our peak performance
- We care less about our personal appearance and how others see us physically

Some tips for you to help maintain your job:

  • Be on time not only the first day of work , but everyday you work
  • Dress according to the dress code set out by the employer
  • Ask if you are unsure about any aspect of the position or the company. Work as a team member
  • Respect others the way you would like to be respected
  • Be aware and follow all ( not some ) of policies and regulations
  • Last but not least- TRY, TRY, TRY your hardest at every job that you are assigned
