Licensing a big part of security industry - September 2000

Jump Start -- by Mark Sproxton

The private security industry holds many opportunities for those who like protecting and helping to protect other people and/or their stuff. Armed with numerous entry-level positions, the industry also has many places for those looking to undertake specific training or on-going learning opportunities. Here's some information and ideas that may help with your career planning or work search.

Employers with job listings for security guards posted at the Calgary Youth Employment Centre require some or all of the following: the ability to read, write and speak English fluently; over 18; no criminal record; bondable; have a valid driver's licence; be well groomed; have a minimum of a Grade 12 education. The postings are listed on the second floor, near the main reception.

A four-year locksmith apprenticeship program is available through Red Deer College. The course includes working with locking devices, safes, making keys, and evading locking devices. More information on obtaining your journeyman's certification is available through the Alberta Apprentice and Industry Training website.

Those looking to get into locksmithing are required by Alberta Justice to obtain an "Automotive Master Keys" licence in order to legally posses and own lock picking equipment. A criminal background check, and the signing of an affidavit is required prior to licensing. Police departments will charge about $25 for this service. Call the Calgary Police Service's Security Clearance Detail at 268-2052 for more information about this procedure.

The Calgary chapter of the Professional Locksmith's Association of Alberta (PLAA) holds regular meetings and has a list of contact names and number for those wanting more information on the industry.

In Alberta, private investigators and security guards also require provincial licensing. (Some security guard businesses will require you to have both licences, and may pay for those licences after your first year of service.) As with locksmithing, an affidavit must be completed in the presence of a police offer. Call the Calgary Police Service's Security Clearance Detail at 268-2052 for more information about this procedure.

Mount Royal College offers two courses geared to investigation for those looking to expand their knowledge of this area of security. One course runs for two days over two weeks, the other runs for 13 days over seven weeks.

Anyone looking to get into the alarm installation side of the industry also require licensing, but through the city of Calgary. An Alarm Agent Licence requires a letter from an employer stating you are working for them, and a yearly $50 fee. Call 268-5521 for more details.

Having completed a first aid and/or CPR course may give you a leg up if applying for a security guard position. Look under the section "Safety" in the Yellow Pages for listings of course providers.
