Calgary offers many financial training opportunities - November 2000

Jump Start -- by Mark Sproxton

Handling people's money requires much care. Whether it's putting their cash in a bank account, investing it in a savings plan, or counting money in and money out, people need to be comfortable leaving those decisions in others' hands. Luckily there are a multitude of courses, programs, and associations that can take you closer to working in the financial industry. Here's a look at a few opportunities:

Those considering work in an accounts department have a couple of local training programs to investigate. The Academy of Learning offers courses in bookkeeping and accounts receivable and payable, among others. A 12-week accounting technician certificate program is offered by the YWCA Calgary Business College. Chinook College also offers an accounting technician certificate.

Volunteer and non-profit organizations use the services of bookkeeping services and may offer a route to gain hands-on experience.

Work in a financial institution may be made easier by enrolling in the one-year applied banking and business certificate program at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT).

Those considering work closer to the top of a financial institution career ladder, in positions such as a banking manager or investment manager, may want to consider the University of Calgary's (U of C) four-year bachelor of commerce (BCom) or bachelor of management (BMgt) degree programs, or the master of business administration (MBA) programs.

The Canadian Institute of Financial Planners offers a six-course program toward the designation certified financial planner (CFP). As well, The Canadian Securities Institute offers a number of courses, including the Canadian securities course, which is recommended by many securities and financial industry professionals.

Check out the 'net for local stock investment clubs and information on forming your own club. Participation in clubs allow members to develop an understanding of the market and experience buying and selling stock.

Accounting, financial management and business administration programs are offerd at several institutions, including: the University of Athabasca; Mount Royal College; and the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT).

The U of C offers courses leading to a CMA designation through the Faculty of Continuing Education, a three-year bachelor of accounting science degree program and a four-year bachelor of commerce degree program with a specialization in accounting through the Faculty of Management.

Some may also want to consider training to become one of three accountant designations; chartered accountants, certified management accountants or certified general accountants.

Other associations worth a look include:

  • The Investment Dealers Association of Canada
  • The Canadian Association of Financial Planners
  • The Canadian Payroll Association
  • The Alberta Government's collector licence information pages
