Calgary is the place to do it.

A structural change is taking place in Canada. Corporate industry used to drive most of the country's economy, but now there is an increase in small and medium-sized businesses. Fifty-seven per cent of Canada's Gross Domestic Product comes from smaller businesses. Self-employment is the major contributor to job creation in Canada, creating almost 75 per cent of all employment growth since 1990. Small business is rapidly growing and is forecasted to become one of the largest parts of the Calgary economy.

Entrepreneurs are an emerging occupational category in Calgary. The city offers a competitive industrial atmosphere and is supportive of technology and research. Calgary is a city with abundant resources such as natural gas, oil, coal, water, sand, livestock, gravel, dairy and grains. This energy capital of Canada also offers advanced technology, education, arts, tourism and a great customer base. The second largest city in Canada by area, Calgary's overall trading area extends beyond city limits, exceeding 1.9 million people.

Sixty percent of all Alberta exports come from Calgary. Alberta's competitive edge results from a productive labour force and preferable tax conditions. The Calgary Economic Development Authority (CEDA) offers advantages to persuade businesses to locate in Calgary. There are also other professional organizations in Calgary that offer advice and tips for starting a business. They include:

  • Calgary Advanced Technology Centre
  • Calgary Chamber of Commerce
  • Calgary Entrepreneurs Association
  • Federal Business Development Bank
  • Small Business and Industry, a division of Alberta Economic Development and Trade
  • University of Calgary - Faculty of Management
  • University of Calgary - The New Venture Development Group

The creation of new and diverse businesses will continue to strengthen Calgary's economy. Every year the number of small businesses in Calgary is increasing by 10%. There are approximately 49,000 small and home-based businesses currently in Calgary.
