AMEs have many ratings

Here is some information from Transport Canada and its ratings for aircraft maintenance engineer (AME) licences:

(i) M1 -- small non turbo-jet aircraft (includes all airframe, engines, propellers, components, structures, and systems of those aircraft);

(ii) M2 --all aircraft not included in M1 excluding balloons (includes all airframes, engines, propellers, components, structures, and systems of those aircraft);

(iii) E -- aircraft electronic systems (includes communication, pulse, navigation, auto flight, flight path computation, instruments and the electrical elements of other aircraft systems, and any structural work directly associated with the maintenance of those systems);

(iv) S -- aircraft structures (includes all airframe structures);

(v) Balloons.

The requirements for issue of these licences is as follows:

  • Age - The applicant must be 21 years old;

  • Training - A certificate for the successful completion of basic training appropriate to the rating being applied for is required. The applicant may obtain basic training through distance learning, however, they will not be credited for the experience requirement unless they provide a certificate from a training organization whose curriculum has been approved by Transport Canada. This is normally a technical school such as SAIT or NAIT;

  • Knowledge - Transport Canada approved training courses include technical exams on the subjects covered by the course. If the applicant chooses a correspondence course, the technical knowledge exams will be administered by Transport Canada;

  • Experience - The total amount of experience required depends on the rating applied for. For instance, the M and the E ratings require four years of total aircraft maintenance, the S rating requires three years, and the Balloon rating requires 120 hours. The amount of experience credited for experience through basic training depends upon the approved school, but up to a maximum of two years for M or E ratings and 18 months for an S rating;

  • Skill - The applicant is required to prove the performance of a selection of maintenance tasks appropriate to the rating.
