Ongoing education links insurance careers - December 2001

Unlike some industries, the insurance industry still holds many opportunities for those with a high school diploma, but without specific post-secondary education. Although, some jobs in the industry will be much more easily handled with a college or university education.

But no matter how you get into the industry, continuing education will be promoted and favoured. Every employee interviewed for this issue is, has or will participate in some kind of professional development courses, seminars, lectures and so on.

These industry representatives stressed the importance of such pursuits not only for personal development, but for networking opportunities, which can also be a key to success in insurance, and many other industries as well.

Here's a list with information on education/training/licensing related to insurance, along with a host of links to associations, organizations, businesses and some links to on-line job boards that may help get you into a career in insurance:

Education/training/licensing

The University of Calgary (U of C) offers a bachelor of commerce degree with a specialization in risk management and insurance.

Mount Royal College offers a two-year diploma in business administration and insurance.

The Insurance Institute of Southern Alberta offers numerous industry-recognized courses, in addition to organizing speakers and workshops.

An actuarial science program is available at the U of C through the math and statistics department.

The Alberta Insurance Council administers licensing for several insurance industry careers in the province.
