Hot Tip -- by Tim Sieben
Tim

Tim asks that you hold your applause until you have finished reading his hot tip.

Did you know that by the year 2000 over half of us will be employed in work that doesn't even exist today?

The world of work is changing at an alarming pace. Advances in technology and high-tech industries, current demographics and ever-changing economic trends all contribute to this fast-paced change.

What is needed in the working world of tomorrow will be different than what is needed today. Individuals who are not prepared to understand themselves, as well as the changing work environment, will lag behind. It is very important to make learning a life-long endeavour and to constantly reassess your skills.

Because of the advances in technology and the amount of change most workplaces are experiencing, there are some special skills that employers will look for in the people they hire in the future. These skills include:

  • flexibility and adaptability
  • self-motivation
  • commitment to learning
  • creative problem-solving skills
  • computer skills and internet skills
  • self-marketing skills
  • and initiative

If you are interested in finding out which occupations are growing or declining, there are plenty of resources available to you. The Calgary Labour Market Profiles, Roger Goodman's Alberta Careers Beyond 2000, and Future Beat Magazine are just a few examples. Even better, you can find these resources and much more down here at the Calgary Youth Employment Centre.
