The Calgary Zoological Society, which operates the Calgary Zoo, Botanical Garden and Prehistoric Park, is dedicated to recreation, education, conservation, and wildlife research. Our staff and volunteers are what make us a success in these activities and keep us focused on our commitment to providing outstanding recreation for the whole family.

Do I have to be 18 to work there?

The Calgary Zoo is open 365 days per year. Employees must be at least 15 years of age and have one to two years cash handling experience.

How many people do you employ?

There are over 400 employees at the Calgary Zoo. Employees who work with the animals and the plants are employed by the City of Calgary. The Calgary Zoological Society employs the remainder of the staff.

Full vs. Part Time Positions

The Calgary Zoological Society employs people on a seasonal and year round basis. The largest department within the Society is the Guest Services Department which serves the Zoo's guests on daily basis. This includes positions in Admissions, Guest Relations, Retail Operations and Food and Beverage.

Guest Services' employees enjoy the flexibility of scheduling in a year round operation. Many are students who work full time during the summer months and then switch to a part time schedule to coordinate with their schooling. Other employees work full time year round and some enjoy a shorter work day which allows them to concentrate on family responsibilities.

Do I need to drop off a resume or can I apply online?

All openings are featured on the Zoo's webpage at www.calgaryzoo.com. Resumes can be faxed, mailed, dropped off or e-mailed. E-mail is recommended as it goes directly to the Manager responsible for hiring.

How much will I get paid?

The Calgary Zoo offers a competitive rate of pay, seasonal or advancement bonuses, a flexible schedule, comprehensive training and a fun work environment! Imagine being able to feed the animals on your day off or having your staff meeting held in the gardens!

What do you look for in employees?

If you are interested in working in a fun and diverse environment, are hardworking, motivated and have a minimum of two years cash handling experience, please apply!

What skills do I need?

Applicants must have one to two years of cash handling and customer service experience. Retail Customer Service Representatives are required to stand for long periods of time and be available to work a variety of shifts including weekend and statutory holidays.

What type of schooling do I need?

When applying for positions within the Guest Relations, Food Services or Retail Operations divisions there is no required level of education. The only restriction is that applicants be at least 15 years of age. For specific occupations we offer training with advancement and increased pay for each level you achieve.

Do you have summer positions available?

Summer positions are available starting mid-May. Applicants must have a minimum of one to two years experience and be available to work full time up to and including Labour Day weekend.

Positions currently available.

Our visitors often say to us, "It must be great to work with the animals at the Zoo"! It is, but there are a whole variety of other Zoo jobs that are great too!

We hire accountants, painters, education program presenters, food servers, horticulturists, gardeners, carpenters, fund-raisers, and electricians, just to name a few. All of these people have a critical role to play in making the Zoo successful and keeping us focused on our mission.

Guest Services is currently accepting applications for employees within the Food and Beverage operation. There are openings for employees who have little or no experience as well as opportunities for those with experience in food service and customer service

RETAIL SERVICES

Do you love working in retail? Are you looking for an opportunity to work hard, yet have fun? Spend your days working with plush gorillas and rubber snakes in the Calgary Zoo Gift Shops!

Weekend positions are now available for mature applicants who have a minimum of two years retail experience. These positions are available immediately and have the possibility of going full time for the summer season.

Summer positions are also available starting mid-May. Applicants must have a minimum of two years experience and be available to work full time up to and including Labour Day weekend.

Applicants will be required to work a variety of shifts including weekdays, weekends and evenings. Gift shop hours are 9:00am ­ 6:00 pm daily with extended hours for special events.

Food Services

Are you at home during the day looking for something to do?

Why not come and join the food service staff at the Calgary Zoo for a couple of hours a day?

Work in our daily operations food department and enjoy the benefits of getting out of the house, meeting new people, making extra money all while you're having fun.

Also, as a benefit of employment, we give all of our staff a membership to the Calgary Zoo for themselves and their families!

Custodial - Seasonal/Part-time

The Calgary Zoo is looking for Seasonal / Part Time Custodians. The successful applicants will be part of the team responsible for cleaning all of the public buildings, washrooms and signage throughout the Zoo, picking up garbage, litter and debris throughout the Zoo grounds, including parking lots and surrounding areas, cleaning of viewing bays and glass and any other cleaning related duties as requested. You must be able to work a variety of shifts including early mornings, weekends, holidays and evenings. Grade 12 education and the ability to communicate in both verbal and written English are essential requirements for this position.

Physical Demands of Job: Applicants are advised that the work requires demanding physical labour in a variety of weather conditions.
