Southland Transportation is a school bus contractor, providing service to 14 school boards and weekday commuter service to the communities of Cochrane and Okotoks. Southland's charter department also provides transportation for a schools, associations and large group movements such as "Globalfest", "Mozart on the Mountain", Calgary International Children's Festival and a variety of film and television productions. Southland celebrates its 34th Anniversary in 2005.
Southland also provides personalized training programs for FREE to potential staff. The average person with a class 5 (regular) licence trains from 8-10 half days (35-40 hours). This training includes classroom sessions on Policy, Procedures, Guidelines and Maintenance/Operations.

An entry-level opportunity is our permanent part-time school bus drivers who work approximately 190 days throughout the school year.
What is your hiring process?
All applicants must come in for a personal interview. Southland has all applicants complete a pre-employment questionnaire based on basic driving knowledge. Answers are reviewed with each applicant and then those who qualify are requested to continue with the application process. Filling in all the forms, along with the interview takes between 1 - 1.5 hours.

Do I need a resume to apply to your company, or can I apply online?
No, you can complete an online test, however you will have to come in to Southland to apply in person.
What do you look for in employees of Southland Transportation?
Southland requires people who are positive, enjoy working with children and the public, excellent time keepers, reliable, with good driving records and a fluent command of English.
What other qualifications do I need to work at Southland?
Driving and mechanical aptitude are useful as well as public relations training. Southland does, however, provide the training that staff need to perform their job including upgrading to a Class 2 licence. In order to receive this training, potential employees must have the following:
- Because of Southland's commitment to safety, all applicants undergo drug and alcohol testing.
- Regular Class 5 License. We provide FREE training to upgrade you to Class 2
- Desire to only work part-time
- A Clear driving record - no more than 3 demerits on your driving record
- You should be between the ages of 21 and 65
- Have at least 5 years driving experience
- Fluency in both written and spoken English
- Three References - 1 Business, 1 Character and 1 Family (not a spouse)
- Alberta Health Care or Social Insurance card for Security clearance
- Applications convicted of impaired driving, physical or sexual assault charges are not eligible for employment with Southland
What type of schooling do I need?
Southland doesn't require any specific education, applicants need to be fluent in English and have a good attitude.
Do I have to be 18 to work for your company?
We will consider youth who are 17 years old for our apprentice program, all other applicants should be at least 21 years of age.
How much will I get paid?
Each position is paid based upon the skills, experience, and training required. Drivers earn approximately $1,000 to $1,300 per month for 3 - 6 hours per day, Monday to Friday only with evenings and weekends free.
Southland will also provide the necessary training to upgrade to Class 2 for FREE.
