The Calgary Construction Association joins contractors, individuals and firms interested in the building and construction industry through out Calgary. The Calgary Construction Association believes in the importance of providing youth opportunities within the Construction industry through their Youth Employment Program.
This program provides youth with an opportunity to start their career in one of 31 construction trades by completing a 3 week paid work experience. Youth between the ages 16-24 years old, who are unemployed/underemployed, no longer attending school and career oriented are able to apply for this program. Youth must be reliable, punctual and ready to learn. At the end of the 3 week work experience the employer has the option of hiring the youth on.

Do you offer both part-time and full-time positions?
No, only full-time opportunities are offered.
What is your hiring process?
An interview needs to be scheduled with the coordinator for entry into the Youth Employment Program followed by an interview process by companies who hire youth for their work experience. Prior to starting a work experience, youth need to complete the Construction Safety Training System. There is no charge to complete this program and youth are presented with a certificate upon completion.
Do I need a resume or can I apply online?
A resume is required.
What do you look for in employees?
Youth must have a genuine interest in the construction trades, be reliable, punctual, and willing to learn. Having a vehicle is preferred but not required. Youth should also have the appropriate equipment such as steel toed boots for working on a construction site.
What type of schooling do I need?
No experience/schooling is required, but a high school diploma helps.
DO I have to be 18 to work for your company?
Some employers will take youth under 18 but the majority of employers prefer youth who are at least 18 years old.
How much will I get paid?
The average pay is between $13-$16 per hour.
What kind of skills do I need?
A general knowledge of some basic hand and power tools is needed. The ability to read a tape measure is also important. A good grasp of English is also required because much of the training is on the job and very verbal. Youth must be motivated, willing to learn and be able to work independently and part of a team.
Do you have summer opportunities available?
Opportunities in the summer are available but may turn into full-time employment.
What are some of the careers available in the program?
There are 31 careers available. They include:
Boilermaker - build, erect, repair, test, and maintain all types of broilers, tanks, and pressure vessels. Perform all types of structural and plate work on dust, air, gas, steam, oil, water, and other liquid-tight pressure vessels.
Bricklayer - construct and repair structures such as walls, partitions, patios, arches, fireplaces, and chimneys by preparing and layering brick and other masonry units.
Cabinetmaker - build and repair custom or production-type fixtures and furniture made of wood or wood substitutes.
Carpenter - construct, erects and repair buildings and other structures made of wood, wood substitutes, steel and other materials.
Concrete finisher - places and finishes concrete floors, driveways, sidewalks, curbs, bridge decks, and other concrete structures.
Construction Worker - prepares and cleans up construction sites, moves materials and equipment and performs demolition, excavation, and compaction activities.
Crane and Hoisting Equipment Operator - service and operate the hoist and swing equipment used to move machinery, materials and other large objects.
Drywall Worker - There are two kinds of drywall workers: installers and finishers. Installers, also called applicators, fasten drywall panels to the inside framework of residential houses and other buildings. Finishers, or tapers, prepare these panels for painting by taping and finishing joints and imperfections.
Electrical Rewind Mechanic - tests, rebuilds and repairs electric motors, generators, transformers, controllers, and related electrical and mechanical equipment used in commercial, industrial, and institutional establishments. Maintain the electric motors and related equipment used in power machinery and equipment in various applications such as production plants and large businesses.
Electrician - install, alter, repair and maintain electrical systems designed to provide heat, light, power, control, signals or fire alarms for all types of buildings, structures and premises.
Elevator Constructor - install, modify, service, and repair electric and hydraulic elevators, personnel and man-hoists, moving walkways, stage lifts, escalators and related equipment.
Floor Covering Installer - install, repair, and replace resilient floor covering materials such as underlay, carpet, sheet goods (e.g. vinyl) and tile in commercial, residential, and industrial buildings.
Gasfitter - size, install, test, adjust, and service, natural gas and propane equipment ranging from residential furnaces to industrial boilers.
Glazier - cuts and installs glass and aluminum systems for commercial, residential, and automotive applications.
Heavy Equipment Operator - use a variety of mobile machines and attachments to excavate, grade, and landscape earth or move workers, materials, and equipment.
Instrumentation Mechanic - installs, maintains, and repairs the measuring and control instruments used in industrial and commercial processing.
Insulator - apply, remove, and repair thermal and acoustical insulation (e.g. calcium silicate, glass foam, mineral wool, Styrofoam, fiberglass) on all types of industrial equipment (e.g. duct piping, heat exchangers, tanks, vessels).
Ironworker - fabricates, constructs, and joins scaffolding, structural steel buildings, bridges, ornamental, ironwork and pre-cast structures.
Landscaper - work with other trades to carry out landscaping operations and design in a variety of environments. These environments include residential, commercial and public grounds, playgrounds, golf courses, garden centers, tree nurseries, greenhouses and interior landscapes.
Lather/Interior Systems - assembles and installs the framework for gypsum materials in buildings.
Locksmith - installs, adjusts, and repairs locks, makes keys and changes lock combinations. They work on residential, automotive, commercial, and institutional locksets and door hardware. May also install and maintain more sophisticated security systems.
Millwright - installs, maintains, repairs, and troubleshoots stationary industrial machinery and mechanical equipment in factories, production plants, and recreational facilities.
Painter and Decorator - apply paint, wall coverings and other finishes to interior and exterior surfaces of buildings and other structures.
Plasterer - select, mix, and apply gypsum, cement, and acrylic mixtures to exterior and interior walls and ceilings to produce plain or decorative surfaces that are fire, weather or sound resistant.
Plumber - plan, install, and service plumbing systems, fixtures, piping equipment and controls.
Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic - install, maintain, repair, and overhaul industrial, commercial and residential refrigeration and air conditioning systems and their component parts.
Roofer - prepares and applies protective coverings to flat and slopped roof surfaces.
Scaffolder - puts up scaffolding or working platforms for construction workers to use when building, maintaining, or repairing buildings and structures.
Security Alarm Installer (Fire) - installs and maintains electronic security alarm systems for homes, businesses and industrial properties.
Sheet Metal Worker - designs, fabricates, assembles, installs and repairs sheet metal products.
Sprinkler Systems Installer - fabricates, installs, tests, maintains, inspects and repairs sprinkler systems in industrial operations, department stores, office buildings, hotels, schools, hospitals, and residences.
Steamfitter / Pipefitter - lay out, assemble, fabricate, maintain and repair piping systems which carry water, steam, chemicals or fuel used in heating, cooling, lubricating and other processes.
Structural Steel and Plate Fitter - lay out, prepare and assemble structural components for buildings, bridges and other load-carrying structures, and plates for tanks, boilers, pressure vessels and similar products.
Tilesetter - covers repairs and decorates exterior and interior walls, floors and other surfaces using ceramic, mosaics, marble and quarry time, slate, stone, terrazzo or granite.
Welder - joins and severs metal components and makes metal parts, tools, machines and equipment.
