Soft Skills Development

Soft skills are character traits that enhance or complement your other skills. They may include things like language, optimism, friendliness, or politeness, to name a few. In general, things that help when working with others.

Employers need people with specific skills to accomplish the tasks they are hired for, but often the deciding factor in hiring a new employee, is how well they will fit socially in the work environment.

For this reason, it is a good idea to highlight soft skills on your résumé. You could attempt to do this by saying things like "I am a team player" or "I am friendly and outgoing", but those are just words until you can back them up with examples.

Social clubs, volunteer work, hobbies and sporting activities are good examples that highlight your soft skills. As a bonus many of those activities also include transferable skills that may relate directly to a potential job.

Check out the examples below to see how you can apply soft skills to enhance your résumé and interviews.

If you find that you don't have similar examples to draw from in your own life, now might be a good time to consider joining a club or doing some volunteer work . You will gain confidence, feel satisfaction, enhance your résumé and have fun all at the same time!
