The City of Calgary Youth Employment Centre has committed to working alongside United Way Calgary and Area in offering Career Talks and Career Tours in conjunction with All in For Youth high schools in Calgary.
Career Talks promotes high school completion by having volunteers share their personal stories and journeys into their respective professions through small, informal discussion groups (1-10 students). Each Career Talk focuses on the importance of setting obtainable goals, navigating the world of work, overcoming challenges and self discovery. They are best used as a hook...a way to motivate students to explore an array of career opportunities. They are not professional presentations, recruiting events, hiring fairs or a way of convincing students towards a certain career path.
Career Tours are company or site visits for students so they can get a feel of the workplace and learn more about career opportunities within a specific industry/company.
All In for Youth is a citywide initiative focused on school completion. The initiative aims to reduce the high school dropout rate in Calgary by 50% by 2017.
