Score a $1000 Scholarship

Apply for a $1,000 scholarship when you start your job search or make a career plan.

Eligibility Criteria for YEC Scholarships

  • Must be working on or have completed career planning or job search activities with an Employment Counsellor at The City of Calgary Youth Employment Centre.
  • Must plan to enroll in either an accredited post-secondary institution, apprenticeship, training or upgrading program for a minimum of one semester, within one year of this application.
  • Must be between the ages of 15-24 years old.
  • Must not have been a previous winner of the scholarship.
  • Must not be related to an employee or be employed at the Youth Employment Centre.

Selection Criteria

All applications will be evaluated by a selection committee appointed by the Youth Employment Centre.

Scholarship recipient will be selected and notified in July.

Recipients will receive one cheque made payable to the educational institution selected for enrollment.

Application deadline is June 30, 2014

Are you 15 or 16 years old?
Can't get a job because you have no experience?
Available for 3 weeks this summer?

Jump $tart your summer AND your future!

Jump $tart is a free program for 15 and 16 year olds interested in developing their employment skills. The goal of Jump $tart is to increase self-awareness, improve employment readiness, and build confidence for job search and the workplace. The program involves workshops, guest speakers, workplace tours and an optional 25-hour work exploration opportunity.

Jump $tart will run from July 7-24, 2014. If interested in the optional work exploration, youth would continue until August 1st, 2014. The program will be at the Youth Employment Centre (YEC), Monday to Friday, 9:00am - 3:30pm.

Want to join Jump $tart?

  1. Are you 15 and 16 years old? (must be 15 by the first day)
  2. Complete an application form (download here) and submit by June 10, 2014 at 4pm
  3. Attend one of the following information nights OR schedule a private meeting
    • May 22, 2014
    • May 27, 2014
    • June 5, 2014

All information nights are:

  • 5:30-6:30pm
  • At The Youth Employment Centre (2nd floor, 315 10th Avenue SE, Calgary, AB)

If you are 17 years old, we encourage you to apply, as we may be able to accept you into the program.

Discovering Your Opportunities is a paid five week career and life-planning program running July 2 – August 1 at Louise Dean Centre. Designed especially for expectant and young mothers (15-19 years old) completing high school, the program offers career planning skills as well as hands on work experience related to the participants’ interests, while completing high school credits. This year Discovering Your Opportunities celebrates its 15th Anniversary.

Perks of the Program:

  • Participants are paid for the duration of the program at $10.00/ hr for their time in the classroom and at the job site
  • Participants can gain high school credits
  • Child care is provided onsite at Louise Dean Centre
  • A bus pass will be provided to each participant in the month of July, and bus tickets are provided in August
  • Both breakfast and lunch is provided to participants
  • Gain valuable work experience and a mentor from the business community

The Youth Employment Centre is working in partnership with the Calgary Board of Education (Louise Dean Centre), Catholic Family Services, and employers and organizations to deliver this enriching opportunity.
